While I usually go with aMai Taior Pina Colada, my husbandalwayspicks a Hawaiian Lava Flow drink.
It’s kind of like a Pina Colada but with a burst of strawberry flavor. And the lava flow drink is layered in a way that’s super pretty!
This lava flow alcoholic drink recipe has no added sugar, and it’s also dairy-free.

Recipe for Lava Flow co*cktails
Makes 4 servings
Lava Flow Drink Ingredients
- 4 oz white rum
- 4 oz coconut rum
- 10 ozfrozen strawberries (or fresh strawberries)
- 8 ozpineapple juice
- 8 ozcream of coconut
- 2 cups crushed ice
- Pineapple slices and cherries for garnishing, optional
Hawaiian Lava Flow Recipe
- In a blender, add strawberries, coconut rum, and light rum. Blend to a puree. Transfer to a clean container or pitcher.
- Rinse the blender clean. Add pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and crushed ice. Blend until smooth.
- Divide the strawberry and rum mixture among 4 serving glasses. Then slowly pour the pineapple coconut mixture into each tall glass or hurricane glass on top of the other mixture.
- Garnish with pineapple slices and strawberries. Totally optional, but it would be fun to include. A pineapple and co*cktail umbrella would make it feel like a tropical vacation too!
How to Get The Lava Flow Effect
Lava Flow co*cktails are made in two parts. First, you’ll blend the frozen strawberries and the two rums until smooth. Pour this mixture into serving glasses.
Next, rinse the blender clean. Then blend the pineapple juice, coconut cream, and crushed ice until smooth.
Now, to get the lava flow effect, slowly pour the pina colada mixture over the strawberry mixture in each glass and watch the strawberry mixture rise!
Keeping it Cold
To make ahead of time: refrigerate each component after blending to keep them really cold before you assemble the drinks.
However, don’t make this lava flow drink co*cktail too far ahead because the icy components in step two will melt, and you will not get the lava flow effect.
