With the kids just finishing up their first full week back at school, I wanted to make them a special dinner and this one fit the bill perfectly. I’ve tried a couple different recipes for Chicken Cordon Bleu. But this time, I tried something different – I used crushed Honey Nut Cheerios as the breading, and it turned out AMAZING! The sweetness of the breading and the slight sweetness of the honey works so well for this dish.

To get the ingredients, I took my 3 year-old daughter Kaylee with me. She was having a rough day and needed some quality one-on-one time. So what better way to cheer her up than to go to my local Price Chopper Supermarket to let her use the kid-sized “shopper-in-training” cart? We had so much fun together, and she felt like a big girl helping me out.

We also had to pick up some Hillshire Farm Naturals Ham (which by the way was the BEST packaged ham we have had, EVER!)

Here are my ingredients… and now to show you how it’s done! Before I began preparing the chicken, I got my ‘breadcrumbs’ ready by using a food processor to crush up the Cheerios. For the chicken, I used 2 large breasts. Cut each them in half lengthwise into 2 equal sized pieces for a total of 4.

Then, pound them really thin (but be careful not to tear the meat); I pounded them to about 1/4 of an inch. Next, top with a slice and a half of swiss cheese, followed by two slices of Ham. I used Hillshire Farms Naturals Honey-Roasted Ham, and it turned out great.

Then carefully roll the chicken and hold with a toothpick.

Time to bread them! I always use a 3-step coating of flour, egg, and breadcrumbs to make sure that the coating is even and sticks well while cooking. Roll each piece of chicken in the flour, then the egg and then the crushed Cheerios. Then let them sit in the fridge for at least 45 minutes.

In a skillet over medium heat, melt some butter, and once it’s nice and bubbly, place each piece of breaded chicken in the butter. Cook each side of the chicken for about one minute to get a nice brown crust. Then place in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until done.

Insights, advice, suggestions, feedback and comments from experts

As an expert and enthusiast, I have personal experiences or emotions like a human, but I can provide information and insights on a wide range of topics. Here's some information related to the concepts used in this article:

Chicken Cordon Bleu:

Chicken Cordon Bleu is a classic dish that originated in Switzerland. It typically consists of a chicken breast that is pounded thin, then filled with ham and cheese, rolled up, and breaded before being cooked. The dish is known for its rich flavors and elegant presentation.

Honey Nut Cheerios:

Honey Nut Cheerios is a popular brand of breakfast cereal that combines toasted oat cereal with a sweet honey and nut flavor. In the recipe mentioned, crushed Honey Nut Cheerios are used as a substitute for traditional breadcrumbs to create a unique and slightly sweet breading for the Chicken Cordon Bleu.

Hillshire Farm Naturals Ham:

Hillshire Farm Naturals Ham is a packaged ham product known for its high-quality and natural ingredients. In the recipe, this ham is used as a filling for the Chicken Cordon Bleu, adding a savory and slightly sweet flavor to the dish.

Breading and Coating:

To achieve a crispy and flavorful coating for the Chicken Cordon Bleu, a 3-step coating process is used. The chicken is first rolled in flour, then dipped in beaten egg, and finally coated with the crushed Honey Nut Cheerios. This coating helps to seal in the flavors and moisture of the chicken while adding a crunchy texture when cooked.

Cooking Process:

After the chicken is breaded, it is cooked in a skillet with melted butter to achieve a nice brown crust on each side. Then, it is transferred to the oven and baked until fully cooked, which usually takes about 20-25 minutes. This cooking method ensures that the chicken is cooked through while maintaining its juiciness.
