Todd Waldron Ettlinger, a New York City land surveyor, civic leader, Staten Island Zoo trustee, family man, and “larger-than-life figure,” recently passed away. In his over fifty-year career, he worked on many projects throughout the city including interceptor sewers, New York City schools and parks, Co-op City, subway track alignments and many more. He was immensely proud to have been the third generation in a business that now boasts 140,000 records and spanned 120 years, says his obituary, which is available here.

John Hugh (Jack) Ritchie, 97, a beloved father and grandfather, died Feb. 6, 2024 in Ohio. The former Staten Islander served in World War II and later worked for Proctor & Gamble, retiring after 40 years as a production manager. Jack was a Deacon at Immanual Union Church in Staten Island and was also a member of the Palm Coast United Methodist Church. An avid golfer until the age of 93, Jack also enjoyed ballroom dancing and traveling with his wife, cherishing their time in Palm Coast, Florida. Read the full obituary on SILive.com.

Nicolina Barrett, 67, a mother who dedicated herself to helping others and advocating for causes that mattered to her, died Feb. 20, 2024. “Beyond her advocacy work, Nicolina found immense joy in spending time with her family and friends. Her love knew no bounds, and she cherished every moment shared with her loved ones. She had a special bond with the family dog, Hunter, finding solace and companionship in his presence. Nicolina will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of laughter, compassion, and advocacy will continue to inspire and uplift us,” reads her obituary.

John B. Cichon, described as “a loving and selfless pops” who was a proud American, died Feb. 21, 2024. He was a devoted son, loyal brother, dedicated father, “and most of all a loving and selfless Pops,” says his obituary. Mr. Cichon was a friend to many, but his family meant “everything to him.” He loved being a father to his two children, John Nicholas and Ana Katrina. John was not only a proud American but took great pride in his Canadian and Polish roots. He proudly represented his nationality and took great pleasure in knowing and honoring his heritage, reads his obituary.

Mary Ellen Crowley, 90, a devoted aunt and beloved sister who loved time with her nieces and nephews, is being remembered for her loyalty and devotion, especially in coming to the aid and caring for others. Thomas Marli, a longtime Staten Islander and former state Health Department employee, died Jan. 17, 2024. “Tom, the youngest of three boys, was a diehard Yankee’s and Giants fan, history buff, avid lover of books and board games, and always up for an adventure. Never marrying or having children of his own, Tom took on the big brother role of his best friend Mike DiCarlo’s youngest children, Michael and Elida. He spent countless hours with the family who will always remember him fondly. From mud ball fights to trivia nights, and long days at the lake, Tom always brought humor and wit to every environment,” reads his obituary.

Kevin S. McKeever, 63, a native islander and beloved father and grandfather, passed away on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024, in Bradenton, FL, surrounded by his family. Born and raised in Staten Island, Kevin graduated from Curtis High School and St. John’s University. In the late ‘90s, he relocated to Florida to be closer to his family and pursue his career. A highly independent and loving individual, Kevin was the founder and owner of McKeever’s Automotive. He took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren, family, and dogs. Making memories on the water and attending Rays baseball games were among his cherished pastimes. Kevin’s endearing spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew and loved him. Cyril Mericko, 83, A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Zavadka, Slovakia, Cyril experienced life under Nazi and Soviet occupation before relocating to NYC at 11. A graduate of Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades in 1958, he enlisted in the US Army in 1960, serving proudly in Germany and France. Married to Ann for 58 years, Cyril was a devoted husband and loving father to his two daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. Survived by nephews, nieces, and family in Zavadka, Cyril was a multilingual and extraordinary grandfather who attended every school program, sporting event, and dance recital. Cyril’s love for America, parties, family dinners, bowling, road trips, old movies, and the Everly Brothers reflected his joyful spirit. After retiring, Cyril and Ann explored their roots, visiting Slovakia and touring Eastern Europe. His stoicism, lack of complaints, and remarkable strength left a lasting impression on neighbors, friends, and family.
